The excellent lighting system makes hours of close work possible. Also in the basement are several shelves. Under the children's reading room is found the furnace room and storage and supply rooms.</text>

The windsor chairs, and tables with turned legs are of maple, carrying out the colonial idea. As the light filters through the Venetian blinds, it is softened somewhat, a feature which adds restfulness to the room. Panels are of natural knotty pine, as are the shelves and ledges.</text>

                <text>Children from all walks of life pause before the charging desk to have books checked before taking them home. Boys and girls from homes where parents speak little English learn from books much of the folk lore of our country. Often the youngest borrowers sit on the movable steps shown in the picture to look at the pictures in books which they plan to borrow. The original books in this section were given by Mrs. Ella Rose in memory of her husband, a native of North Branford.&#13;
Near the corner may be seen a sampler worked by a little North Branford girl a hundred years ago. This, and other similar articles, were the gifts of Miss Ethna Hoadley. Two windows behind the charging desk give light for the librarian's work table, and in the corner to the left are book cases for books not ready for circulation.</text>

                <text>Across the room is the children's section. Here, the same type of tables and chairs have been fashioned for children. Boys find here stories of adventure, bird and animal life, and facts as well as stories of airplanes and modern sciences. The entire front section of the room holds books for high school readers. The nucleus of this collection was the gift of Mr. Alexander McKernan. &#13;
More pictures adorn the walls, including one of Mr. James C. Atwater, and another of the Atwater ancestral home. Near the center of this section is placed a collection of pictures taken the day of the dedication and sent to the library by Mr. Atwater.</text>

                <text>A charming corner meets the eye as one turns to look more closely at the interior. Perhaps the friendly tick-tock of the grandfather's clock is the reason, but without fail, the visitor seems to look in this direction first.&#13;
A doorway opens outward into an attractive hallway, where stairs lead up and down. Beside the door stands the great clock, a thing of beauty with its pieces of inlaid, its carvings, its beautiful face, and brass ornaments. Down one side and across the end of the library are hundreds of books from the Atwater collection. Here are chairs and tables where adults may sit and read, or just relax. Here hangs a flag with "The American's Creed", the "Declaration of Independence" and the American eagle and flag pictured beneath.&#13;
In the filing cabinet may be found catalogue cards for each book in the library. In the large drawers below will be found picture collections, and an album of bird songs, a novel feature, the gift of Mr. Atwater. On the wall near the clock is a painting of a Swiss lake. Other handsome paintings adorn the walls, all gifts of Mr. Atwater.</text>

Hanging on the side walls of the entrance way are "The Magna Carta" and a scene in the Congressional Library, also the gifts of Mr. Charles B. Atwater.</text>
