Title A name given to the resource Atwater Memorial Library 1943 dedication Description An account of the resource This building which was completed and dedicated in 1943, is the gift of James C. Atwater of New York City who died in Springfield, Mass. Nov. 1, 1911. Mr. Atwater was born March 11, 1824, in North Branford, and he gave this building to the people of his native town as a memorial to his father, the Rev. Charles Atwater, a pastor of the Congregational Church in North Branford from 1809 to the time of his death, Feb. 21, 1825. Pictures and notations which were combined into a booklet to help Mr. Atwater visualize the memorial which he had built to honor his grandfather. Mr. Atwater, an octogenarian, was confined to his room in a hotel suite in Springfield, Massachusetts and could not visit the library. The booklet was inscribed: Presented to Mr. Charles B. Atwater on The First Anniversary of the Dedication of the Atwater Memorial Library by the Children of North Branford with the help of the Librarian and Mr. McKernan. Mr. Charles Morris , trustee, suggested that it be offered to the New Haven Colony Historical Society in New Haven, and it was accepted by them for preservation. The pictures were taken by a professional photographer and narrative and making of the booklet was done by the librarian. Boys and girls from homes where parents speak little English learn from books much of the folk lore of our country. Often the youngest borrowers sit on the movable steps shown in the picture to look at the pictures in books which they plan to borrow. The original books in this section were given by Mrs. Ella Rose in memory of her husband, a native of North Branford. Near the corner may be seen a sampler worked by a little North Branford girl a hundred years ago. This, and other similar articles, were the gifts of Miss Ethna Hoadley. Two windows behind the charging desk give light for the librarian's work table, and in the corner to the left are book cases for books not ready for circulation.
