Description
This building which was completed and dedicated in 1943, is the gift of James C. Atwater of New York City who died in Springfield, Mass. Nov. 1, 1911. Mr. Atwater was born March 11, 1824, in North Branford, and he gave this building to the people of his native town as a memorial to his father, the Rev. Charles Atwater, a pastor of the Congregational Church in North Branford from 1809 to the time of his death, Feb. 21, 1825.
Pictures and notations which were combined into a booklet to help Mr. Atwater visualize the memorial which he had built to honor his grandfather. Mr. Atwater, an octogenarian, was confined to his room in a hotel suite in Springfield, Massachusetts and could not visit the library. The booklet was inscribed: Presented to Mr. Charles B. Atwater on The First Anniversary of the Dedication of the Atwater Memorial Library by the Children of North Branford with the help of the Librarian and Mr. McKernan.
Mr. Charles Morris , trustee, suggested that it be offered to the New Haven Colony Historical Society in New Haven, and it was accepted by them for preservation. The pictures were taken by a professional photographer and narrative and making of the booklet was done by the librarian.

Upstairs is located the Selectmen's room in which many meetings are held, and court matters settled. Here it is hoped, at some future date, items of local historic interest may be put on display, when other quarters are available for town offices.
